Solutia is based in St. Louis, Missouri, where our roots trace back nearly 100 years. Although Solutia was created just a few years ago, it has a century-long history. Solutia was formerly the chemical businesses of Monsanto Company, which was founded in St. Louis in 1901. For decades, chemicals were the foundation of Monsanto, which expanded beyond its original identity as a local producer of saccharin to become one of the leading, global chemical organizations by the 1960s.
On August 18, 1997, Monsanto shareowners approved the spin-off of the company's chemical businesses as Solutia Inc. The new company became independent on September 1 of that year. A global enterprise of more than $3 billion in annual sales, $4 billion in assets and 6,000 employees, Solutia is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri with regional headquarters in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Singapore. We operate 35 manufacturing sites in 13 countries.
Today, Solutia is a specialty chemicals company. We use world-class skills in applied chemistry to create solutions for customers, whose products are used by consumers every day.
